"His name was Peter F. Mirabile
Born Dec. 5, 1985, passed Sept.
20, 2003
Lived in Garden City, Long Island,
N.Y.
He was adopted from Korea at age
4 mo.
He was diagnosed with a somewhat
rare disease called aplastic anemia at age 7. Drug therapies for this bone
marrow failure disease were unsuccessful, and was put on the list for a
bone marrow donor. For years none was found. He was extremely limited in
what he was allowed to do sports wise and lived with the cloud of death
over his head for years. Finally a decent bone marrow match was found,
and he went for his transplant. The transplant was a success, it
cured his aplastic anemia, however he passed at post-op day 64 from complications
to the chemo and radition regimen required prior to transplant.
His passion was helping others.
fFrom a young age, helping the little children in the hematology ward.
As he grew up he became a Jr. Garden City fire fighter, and then a full
member. Prior to his transplant he became a certified N.Y.S. EMT - this
was his biggest passion. He would have liked to go on to become a
paramedic, but unfortunately that dream will never come true. The volunteer
ambulance corps he belonged to dedicated their new ambulance #261 to honor
him. He is greatly missed, and has touched many lives for such
a young man.
He was a real hero, our hero!
- living life to the fullest possible, and encouraging his friends to do
the same, always with a big smile on his face. He will never be forgotten."
